The Way, The Truth, And The Life

John 14.6 Jesus answered, “I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.”

In the above passage, Christ has chosen three very specific words to describe himself. The meaning of each one of these words have a very powerful and supernatural effect on the life of his followers. Let’s briefly consider each one.

Jesus is The Way.

Romans 3.23 tells us that ” all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God “. Romans 3.10 says ” There is none righteous, no not one “. All are guilty of sin. Based on our own individual performance, none of us are in right standing with God. There is absolutely nothing that any of us can do to change that. Sin has separated each one of us from The Creator. We could never do enough good deeds to work our way back to Him. God is holy, and holiness demands perfection. The best of us are far from perfect. It’s as if sin has us trapped, and is holding us captive. Our situation would be hopeless. There’s nothing we can do to save ourselves.

” Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners ” 1 Timothy 1.15 . Because of what Jesus did, His life, death, and resurrection, we can be reconciled back to God. Jesus made a way where there was no way, and it’s through faith in Him. Christ spans the distance between us and God. He lived a perfect life, without sin. He gave His perfect life to be an atoning sacrifice for the sins of those who would repent, and put their faith in Him. He rose from the grave three days later, conquering over sin, and death forever. Based on what Jesus has accomplished, we can be forgiven, and made right with God.

Jesus is The Truth.

When Adam, and Eve rebelled in The Garden Of Eden, and believed Satan’s lie, it changed the way we commune with God. Ever since, man has been reaching out in ignorance, and error, trying to grab ahold of anything that’s real, true, and eternal. Searching for something, but not exactly sure what that is, or what it is that’s holding him back. Proverbs 4.19 tells us ” The way of the wicked is as darkness, they do not know what makes them stumble “. Ephesians 4.18 reads ” Having the understanding darkened, being alienated from the life of God through the ignorance that is in them, because of the blindness of their heart “. Romans 3.11 ” there is no one who understands “. Pilate voiced the perplexity of multitudes when he asked ” what is truth ? ” John 18.38

Here we see man’s desperate need for devine illumination, which is provided for us in Jesus Christ. He is The Truth. Christianity is not a religion based on a few truthful points. It is the search for, and the pursuit of, what is the truth ?… about life ?… and death ?… about ourselves ?… about God ?… and how we relate to God ?… Jesus is the answer to all those questions. He reveals God and exposes man. In Him are hidden ” all the treasures of wisdom and knowledge ” Colossians 2.3 . Truth is a person, His name is Jesus Christ !

Jesus is The Life

The entire Bible bears wittiness to the fact that the natural man is spiritually lifeless. He walks according to the course of this fallen world. He has no love for the things of God. He has no reverence for God. He has no concern for the glory of God. He is not spiritual. He is carnal. Self is the centre and circumference of his existence. He is alive to the things of this world but dead to Heavenly things. The person who is outside of Christ exists but has no spiritual life inside them.

Christ is the great Emancipator from death ! ” In him was life, and the life was the light of men ” John 1.4 . When the prodigal son returned from the far country, the father said, ” this, my son, was dead and is alive again; he was lost, and is found ” Luke 15.24 . The one who believes in Jesus has passed from death to life ! ” He who believes in The Son has everlasting life ” John 3.36 . Regeneration takes place in the soul of the one who believes that Jesus is God !
