Revelation 1.12-20. 12 Then I turned to see the voice that was speaking to me, and on turning I saw seven golden lampstands, 13 and in the midst of the lampstands one like the son of man, clothed with a long robe and with a golden sash around his chest. 14 The hairs of his head were white, like white wool, like snow. His eyes were like a flame of fire, 15 his feet were like burnished bronze, refined in a furnace, and his voice was like the roar of many waters. 16 In his right hand he held seven stars, from his mouth came a sharp two-edged sword, and his face was like the sun shining in full strength.
17 When I saw him, I fell at his feet as though dead. But he laid his right hand on me, saying, “Fear not, I am the first and the last, 18 and the living one. I died, and behold I am alive forevermore, and I have the keys of Death and Hades. 19 Write therefore the things that you have seen, those that are and those that are to take place after this. 20 As for the mystery of the seven stars that you saw in my right hand, and the seven golden lampstands, the seven stars are the angels of the seven churches, and the seven lampstands are the seven churches.
This is the seventh installment in a series of posts titled One Like The Son Of Man. It’s a brief study of Jesus’ appearance to John, on the island of Patmos, as recorded in Revelation 1. We’re taking a look at each symbolic description of Christ John gives us and considering it’s meaning.
This study is dedicated to the middle of verse 16.
from his mouth came a sharp two-edged sword
The sharp two-edged sword being referred to here, is none other than the word of God, that is The Holy Bible ! ” All Scripture is breathed out by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, and for training in righteousness, ” 2 Timothy 3.16 . God worked through men of faith to record and compile His infallible word, The Holy Bible.
While at college, Dr. Voddie Baucham was forced to defend his belief in the infallibility of scripture against intellectual atheist professors. He listed five indisputable reasons why he chooses to trust The Bible. He said ” It is a reliable collection of historical documents. It was written by eyewitness during the lifetime of other eyewitness. They reported supernatural events that took place in fulfillment of specific prophecies and claimed that their writings are divine rather than human in origin. ” Throughout the ages, God’s word has held up under the most intense scrutiny.
It certainly is a sharp two-edged sword, that is more than capable of not only defending the truth, but also aggressively attacking all manner of deceit. When going on the offensive, as Charles Spurgeon put it, ” it’s like letting the lion out of the cage ! ” It devours the lies of the enemy !
What are the two sides of this sword ? According to early church father Tertullian, and Richard of St. Victor, the two sides are the law and the gospel. The Old Testiment on one side, which gives us God’s righteous requirements of His law, and The New Testiment on the other, which gives us the good news of how Jesus Christ, the only one who could ever meet those righteous requirements, came and did so on behalf of those who would put all their faith, trust, and hope in Him.
” For all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God. ” Romans 3.23 . Every single individual on the planet needs the forgiveness that can only be found in Jesus Christ. ” If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness. ” 1 John 1.9 . There is hope in Jesus Christ ! Read The Bible.
When you read The Bible, God is talking directly to you. In essence, the whole entire Bible is a question God is asking you… Do you believe in Jesus ?
