Revelation 1.12-20. 12 Then I turned to see the voice that was speaking to me, and on turning I saw seven golden lampstands, 13 and in the midst of the lampstands one like the son of man, clothed with a long robe and with a golden sash around his chest. 14 The hairs of his head were white, like white wool, like snow. His eyes were like a flame of fire, 15 his feet were like burnished bronze, refined in a furnace, and his voice was like the roar of many waters. 16 In his right hand he held seven stars, from his mouth came a sharp two-edged sword, and his face was like the sun shining in full strength.
17 When I saw him, I fell at his feet as though dead. But he laid his right hand on me, saying, “Fear not, I am the first and the last, 18 and the living one. I died, and behold I am alive forevermore, and I have the keys of Death and Hades. 19 Write therefore the things that you have seen, those that are and those that are to take place after this. 20 As for the mystery of the seven stars that you saw in my right hand, and the seven golden lampstands, the seven stars are the angels of the seven churches, and the seven lampstands are the seven churches.
This is the third installment in a series of posts titled One Like The Son Of Man. It’s a brief study of Jesus’ appearance to John, on the island of Patmos, as recorded in Revelation 1. We’re taking a look at each symbolic description of Christ that John gives us and considering it’s meaning.
This post is dedicated to the study of the first half of verse 14.
The hairs of his head were white, like white wool, like snow.
This description is a lot like the one found in Daniel 7.9, “As I looked, thrones were set in place, and the Ancient of Days took his seat. His clothing was as white as snow; the hair of his head was white like wool. His throne was flaming with fire, and its wheels were all ablaze.”
It seems to me that this symbolic description is a direct reference to the diety of Jesus Christ. I believe everything about it ( color, location, and likeness ) represents His diety in three separate yet equally important ways.
1. He is The Ancient Of Days. Throughout The Bible you’ll find that white hair is associated with long life. The Ancient of Days is a title bestowed upon The Lord, due to the fact that He is, in a very unique way, eternal God. He is the beginning. He is before time began. Before there was a day, or a night, there was God. Time is something He created. He has always existed and He has always existed as God. He never changes. He is immutable. He is Holy. He is eternal. The Jews understood that Jesus claimed this about Himself, which is why they attempted to stone Him in John 8.58, after He told them “Before Abraham was, I am.” He is The Ancient Of Days !
2. In addition to long life, wisdom is also associated with white hair in The Bible. God is the source of all wisdom. God is omniscient, that means He is all knowing. Proverbs 15.11 tells us, “Hell and destruction are before the LORD: how much more then the hearts of the children of men?” God see’s and knows everything, even what’s in a persons heart. That’s why true wisdom is looking at things from God’s perspective and having the same attitude towards whatever the situation may be. To “have the mind of Christ” is to discover real wisdom. Jesus is the personification of wisdom. God is all knowing.
3. God is Holy ! Lastly, white is Bibically associated with Holiness, and with purity. The definition of Holiness is infinite purity. Imagine no spot, or blemish, forever, and for all eternity, as white as the driven snow, that’s the Holiness of God. Jesus Christ is Holy God !
Those who know me well, know that I’m a music lover, and thinking about how wonderful God is puts me in mind of lots of songs, and hymns. That’s why I reference them so much. In conclusion of this post, I’d like to leave you with a song from my former worship leader, during my time spent at Jubilee Christian Center, in San Jose California. Here is the great Ron Kenoly singing Ancient Of Days, enjoy !
